The Vineyards 5K (Number 5 Complete!)
5/6/17 - The Vineyards 5K Run / Colleyville, TX (5 of 12)
The first weekend of May was definitely not a slow paced one. Rough workout Friday DAY, double header softball game Friday NIGHT, then... 5K of May on Saturday morning! This 5K, though, was different than any others I've ever ran. This one took place at a Vineyards/Winery.
It was a very different kind of race morning. I get to the starting area of the race where people are normally getting amped up and ready to roll, but to my surprise, we get a lovely, chilled out jazz band (which you'll hear on the attached video). Also, knowing the section of town, I guessed that it would have to be a pretty flat, easy paced stroll for a Saturday morning course. Nope.
Out of all of the races I have ever run, I have never seen one that was 80+% uphill. Now, it wasn't like a super steep hill. The area just kept going up and up and up and up (you get the point), then for a brief minute, a steep downhill would appear, only to take us to the bottom of the next hill that continually went up - always, just enough to make it VERY uncomfortable.
By the end of the race, in which I did much better than I imagined I would do, I really felt like killing over. In a race that brutal, you would expect to be rocking out as you cross the finish line for finishing over 3 miles running without stopping... instead... back to the lovely, chill jazz band. Thank God for my headphones and music selection that pushed me (somewhat literally) to finish this deceivingly rough course.
I am sure that many of the folks that crossed that finish line went straight inside the winery for the free wine tasting. Me, on the other hand, went straight to find my wife who was waiting on me at the car. Thank God for her being there to drive - I don't know if I would have made it home in the condition I was in. Funny thing... I leave the winery in no condition to drive - but it's not cause I've been drinking the wine...
